Take a trip back in time during Back to Morse Week at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station.
The Old Post Office at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station will spring to life with the sound of Morse signals as visiting telegraphists fire up the Old Telegraph Line and start clicking out messages down the line.
Department of Tourism and Culture Community Engagement Ranger, Jennifer Kreusser, said this is a great opportunity for young and old to experience the history of Australia’s first speedy communications link with the world.
“Watching these skilful volunteers at work, you can imagine the days of the old telegraph line, before telephone, mobiles and even the internet,” Ms Kreusser said.
“Morse signalling is a language now seldom used and understood by very few.
“These volunteers return every year to Alice Springs from around Australia for this event.
“They do this for the love of history, and education and their passion for this really shines through.
“Come down and meet the volunteers from the Morsecodian Fraternity at the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to send your own Morse code message anywhere in Australia until Saturday 26 May.
“Why not make a day of it and ride out along the Riverside Walk and bring a picnic!”
Volunteers from the Morsecodian Fraternity will be transmitting messages from 9am-3pm from Saturday 19 May-26 May.
Entry to the historic precinct is free for locals with ID, for visitors a fee applies.
