Yesterday (8 May 2018), at approximately 5.30pm a group of
young people at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre attempted escape.
Initially young people ran away from Youth Justice Workers while being escorted between buildings, and climbed onto the roof.
The event involved nine young people in total. Within the group, one young person attempted to escape by forcing his way through an administration door but was unsuccessful and apprehended in a secure space.
One young person attempted to climb the perimeter fence and was apprehended.
The event was de-escalated with agreed night shift assistance from NT Police by approximately 8.20pm.
An ambulance was called to the Centre to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the young people who are all are safe and well.
One Youth Justice Worker sustained injury during the event and was also seen by the Ambulance Workers at that time.
A full report of the incident will be provided to NT Police and charges considered for the young people.
The Office of the Children’s Commissioner will also be provided a briefing regarding the incident.
