NTAS safeguards the Territory’s history for future growth

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

A co-funded project between the Department of Tourism and Culture’s Northern Territory Archives Services and the Department of Corporate Information Services, will bolster the archival record storage capacity for further expansion and safeguard collections into the future.

The $553,783 project, which is set to commence in April, will see the installation of new compactus shelving with an increase in storage capacity from 4.5kms to 8.6kms in its main repository at the Northern Territory Archives Centre.

Local business C & R Constructions was awarded the project through a public tender.

Northern Territory Archives Service Director, Ms Phyllis Williams, said the NTAS has a significant role in the preservation and management of the Territory’s invaluable archival records, and the new compactus shelving ensured the NTAS was well equipped to continue storing the Territory’s history well into the future.

“The project will be carried out in two consecutive stages over a 12 week period, and will include the removal and replacement of a new compactus and flooring in the south repository,” said Ms Williams.

“The new compactus shelving will expand the availability of storage for government archives, community archives, oral histories, files, photographs, maps, plans and audio recordings.

“The NTAS provides access to archival records, including lending services to NTG agencies and also assists local community and researchers to find and use archival records.”

The NTAS facility located at Kelsey Crescent, Millner was purpose built for the preservation and management of archival records for both the Territory and Australian Governments.
