Darwin will see the return of the exclusive Mega Yacht Octopus when it arrives to Darwin Harbour, expected to be viewed from Stokes Hill Wharf today, until Saturday 28 April 2018.
Owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, this 126 metre long vessel sits in 16th position when it comes to the largest Superyachts in the world.
“Octopus is part of a growing number of Superyachts that are now choosing to frequent the shores of the Northern Territory” Founder of North Australia Yacht Support (NAYS), Ms Ayla Wharton said.
With estimated value of $200 million US, this vessel is fully equipped with a glass-bottom pool, two helicopters, two submarines, a movie theatre, basketball court, recording studio, and accommodations for 26 guests in 41 suites.
Octopus has estimated running costs of $380,000 US per week, and with no information as to who may be on board when it arrives from Cairns, the permanent crew of 60 is hoped to explore the highlights of Darwin whilst in town.
“The increasing attraction of the NT is the remote northern location together with the growing interest of the Kimberley Region and proximity to South-East Asia cruising grounds”.
In 2016, the super yacht industry was worth nearly $2 billion to the Australian economy, contributing an estimated $190 million to tourism alone.
NAYS focus towards offering specialised yacht support, advice and technical assistance to this industry across Northern Australia and into South East Asia.
“Darwin's growing port offers all primary yacht services as well as a spectacular platform to explore the Top End and the Outback of 'Real' Australia” added Ms Wharton.
The best vantage point to admire the Octopus at anchor will be Stokes Hill Wharf which is open for lunch and dinner and home to the iconic RFDS Bombing of Darwin Tourist Facility.
