Territory students set to explore military history through study tours

Department of Trade, Business and Innovation

Fifteen Northern Territory students are set to embark on a trip of a lifetime as part of the 2018 Chief Minister’s Anzac Spirit study tour.

The students and four chaperones will visit France for a tour of World War One battlefields and also attend the Anzac Day commemorations in Villers-Bretonneux, France.

General Manager for Northern Australia Development and Trade, Luke Bowen said the Study Tour promotes the importance of Anzac Day, Australia's involvement in various conflicts since, and the importance of peacekeeping missions today.

“Anzac Day 2018 will mark exactly 100 years since the Second Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in France.

“The town was liberated by the Anzacs in 1918 and the sense of gratitude felt by the residents is as strong today as it was 100 years ago.

“This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to honour an important part of Australia’s history and is aimed at keeping the Anzac spirit alive," Mr Bowen said.

Territory students will also get an opportunity to learn about the important shared military history between the Northern Territory and United States of America, with the Chief Ministers Peace in the Pacific study tour officially launched today.

Three Territory students and one teacher chaperone will be selected to travel to Hawaii for a six day tour of military sites and to attend Pearl Harbour commemorations in Hawaii in December 2018.

“The study tour program will promote the significance of Australia’s enduring relationship with the United States of America and the Northern Territory Government’s commitment to Defence and defence support initiatives,” Mr Bowen said.

“Students will build an understanding of the shared experience and sacrifice of the people in the Northern Territory and Hawaii from their involvement in the bombing of Darwin and Pearl Harbour through to the ongoing importance of peacekeeping missions today.”

All year 10 and 11 students enrolled in a Territory school are eligible to apply for the Peace in the Pacific Study Tour.
