Sharing Arrente with visitors from across the world

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Join Arrente artists Pat Ansell Dodds, Amelia Turner, Carole Turner and Carlene Dodds to talk about their culture and country through painting demonstrations and cultural history walks in Alice Springs.

Department of Tourism and Culture, Director of Arts NT, Angela Hill, said the Arrente Artists: Sharing our Culture program is a community-driven art and Arrernte language project that brings live language exchange to the Alice CBD.

“The demonstrations will include artists painting traditional stories, and talks on the stories using the paintings,” Ms Hill said.

“Sessions will also have interactive components for guests to understand the techniques used in traditional painting.

“Arrente Artists: Sharing our Culture is one of nine exciting new arts programs to have been given the green light to enliven the Alice Springs CBD, as part of the Live Alice Mparntwe Arts program.”

Artist Ms Ansell-Dodds said walking tours by the artists will share stories of locations in and around the CBD.

“Mpartwe, Undoolya and Elempe is Arrente country, but when visitors come here to Alice Springs the galleries and art those visitors see is mostly from other cultures in Central Australia,” said Ms Ansell-Dodds.

“This program will ensure the Central Arrente culture, artists and stories are seen by visitors and known across the world.”

Arrente Artists: Sharing our Culture will work from Adelaide House in the Todd Mall and is open every Wednesday through Saturday from today until June 9.

Painting demonstrations will be at 10am and 12noon and history walks at 10.45am and 12.45pm.

Experienced local producer Milyika Scales will support the production of the Live Alice Mparntwe Arts Program.
