Junior Ranger kicks off again in Katherine

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Grab your boots and pull on your hat, it’s time for Junior Rangers in Katherine!

The Junior Ranger program encourages kids to get out and about, discovering the great outdoors while they explore some of our beautiful Parks and Reserves.

Department of Tourism and Culture, Parks, Wildlife and Heritage, Community Engagement Officer, Clare Pearce, said the Junior Ranger program is a wonderful way for local children to learn about the natural world they live in while having fun and making new friends.

“Being a Junior Ranger is great fun and a fantastic way for kids to discover more about themselves and their world while exploring the bush,” said Ms Pearce.

“Children and their families build their knowledge and skills over the 10 week program, giving them the confidence to go out and experience our amazing Parks and Reserves independently.

“By taking part, Junior Rangers learn to feel comfortable in natural spaces and come away from the program with a greater understanding of their world and how they can make a difference.”

The Junior Ranger program is held over 10 events between May and June in Term Two. Activities usually take place at 5.30-7.30pm on weeknights and 9-11am on weekends.

“As a Junior Ranger you might find yourself doing everything from hiking along backcountry trails, sitting around a campfire with friends or even simply staring up at the stars in the night-time sky,” said Ms Pearce.

“The ever popular Parks and Wildlife Junior Ranger program continues to be offered free to local kids and provides them with the opportunity to contribute to our amazing Territory environment while having fun and making new friends outside in the bush.”

Activities are hands-on, so expect to get dirty!

To be a Junior Ranger, children must be aged between 9 and 12 years and be able to commit to the whole program. Enrolments in the program are limited to 30 spaces so get in quick.

Enrolment forms and information can be found on the Parks and Wildlife website at www.nt.gov.au/leisure/parks-reserves/become-a-junior-ranger.
