The Alice Springs Desert Park will be hosting special daily shows over the Easter long weekend to celebrate the iconic Bilby family and friends.

It’s an Easter Party for all ages, with older children and adults encouraged to learn about the Bilby’s threats with Find the Feral, as well as the Bilby vs Bunny tug of war.

Special daily programs are taking place every afternoon from 1pm to celebrate the Park’s Greater Bilby and its friend the Mala – both vulnerable species native to Central Australia.

The program includes exciting visits to the Bilby Burrow full of arts and craft activities, the chance to find treasures on the Bilby Treasure Hunt, as well as the ever popular Easter Egg Hunt and appearance of the Easter Bilby at 1pm on Sunday 1 April.

Department of Tourism and Culture, Alice Springs Desert Park Director of Management Services, Paul AhChee Ngala, said the Bilby and Friends Easter Party was a great family fun day out to celebrate Easter, while also learning about the plight of the Greater Bilby and Mala.

“We’re really excited to host the Bilby’s Easter Party over the entire Easter Weekend, providing really fun and engaging ways for family members of all ages to learn about the Greater Bilby and Mala, and the struggles this vulnerable species experiences in the wild,” said Mr Ah Chee.

“The Bilby is facing the threat of extinction and without education and our work with the National Bilby Fund, we’re at risk of losing it forever.

“The Greater Bilby is a threatened, iconic marsupial that used to live across much of mainland Australia. These days it is restricted to drier desert areas in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, along with a small corner of Southwestern Queensland.

“They face ongoing threats from feral cats, foxes, rabbits and habitat destruction, and the Bilby and Friends Easter Party is an important event on our calendar to raise awareness of the species. I look forward to celebrating with the Alice Springs community,” said Mr AhChee.

The Easter weekend is the perfect opportunity to experience the Desert Park’s world class attractions, taking advantage of the cooler weather.

The Bilby and Friends Easter Party is free, once entered the Desert Park. Standard entry fees apply or a valid Territorian Pass.
