Varuna Residential Fellowship for NT Writers and Songwriters

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Territorians have just one week left to apply for the Varuna Residential Fellowship for NT Writers and Songwriters.

Department of Tourism and Culture, Director of Arts NT, Angela Hill, said the National Writers’ House has partnered with Arts NT to offer residencies to NT writers in the Blue Mountains, NSW.

“This is an amazing new opportunity for NT writers, poets, songwriters and illustrators with two fellowships available for creatives from the Top End and two from the Central Desert regions," said Ms Hill.

“The fellowship covers all accommodation and meals, airfares and transport for the writers, and in-depth manuscript consultations with external Varuna consultants.

“In 2017 the residency program supported five NT writers from the Top End and Central Australia, enabling access to national consultants, networks and resources.

“The writers received one-on-one support resulting in three in-depth manuscript consultations with national Varuna consultants, the completion of a second book, and meetings with potential book publishers."

“The Varuna NT Fellowship Residency is invaluable for remote writers like myself. Not only does it provide us with an opportunity to travel out of Alice Springs, which is a very expensive exercise, the residency also helps with networking, meeting other writers and making better contacts with industry professionals” said Chris Raja, fellowship recipient from 2017.

Applicants may be developing a new work in any field of creative writing, including song writing. This could include literary fiction, genre fiction, illustration and graphic novels, non-fiction, podcasts, poetry, screenplays, scripts, song writing, young adult and junior fiction. Indigenous writers are encouraged to apply.

The partnership was established in 2017 to support NT writers, illustrators or songwriters access to this significant national professional development opportunity.

Residencies may start between July and December 2018, depending on availability in the house.

Applications close 31 March and can be made to Varuna at: http://www.varuna.com.au/varuna/index.php/programs/residential-programs/fellowships/item/537-the-nt-varuna-residential-fellowship
