Junior Ranger kicks off again

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Grab your boots and pull on your hat, it’s time for Junior Rangers in Darwin!

The Parks and Wildlife Junior Ranger program encourages kids to get out and about discovering the great outdoors while they explore some of the beautiful Parks and Reserves in the NT.

Department of Tourism and Culture Parks and Wildlife, Community Engagement Officer Tim Porter, said that the Darwin Junior Ranger program is running in a different format this year.

“Based on the size of the Darwin population, the popularity of the program and also feedback from previous Junior Rangers, the 2018 program will be open to more kids and include more activities for Junior Rangers to do,” Mr Porter said.

“It’s a passport style program. Some activities will be led by a Ranger, other activities the Junior Rangers will be able to do with their friends or independently. On completion of an activity, Junior Rangers get their passport stamped”.

The 2018 Darwin Junior Ranger program will run over terms two and three.

“Junior Rangers and their families are generally pretty busy, so we have built in some flexibility with how activities are offered, so if a school camp or family event comes up, children won’t miss out on their Junior Ranger activity.

Junior Rangers come away from the program with a greater understanding of their world and how they can make a difference.

“The ever popular Parks and Wildlife Junior Ranger program continues to be offered free to local kids and provides them with the opportunity to contribute to our amazing Territory environment while having fun and making new friends outside in the bush”.

To be a Junior Ranger, children must be aged between 9 and 12 years and be able to commit to the whole program. Enrolments in the program are limited so get in quick.

Activities are hands-on, so expect to get dirty!

Applications for the program open 16 March and close 12 April 2018. The program’s official activities commence 17 April and run through to 29 September 2018.

Enrolment forms and information can be found on the Parks and Wildlife website at www.nt.gov.au/leisure/parks-reserves/become-a-junior-ranger.
