Territory Filmmakers to pitch to industry leaders at the Australian International Documentary Conference

The Department of Tourism and Culture’s Screen Territory has provided funding of $17,000 in travel grants for 10 of the NT’s leading documentary film makers to attend the 2018 Australian International Documentary Conference (AIDC).

Taking place in Melbourne from 4-7 March, the AIDC is Australia’s premier event for documentary, factual and unscripted screen content, and the attendance provides the 10 NT practitioners is a powerful opportunity to pitch their film projects to key industry leaders.

Based at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and featuring a four-day marketplace, forum and screening program, AIDC attracts a diverse mix of broadcasters, storytellers, entrepreneurs and documentary fans from Australia, the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

Department of Tourism and Culture Arts and Museums Acting Executive Director, Angela Hill, said she was delighted to support the NT’s documentary film industry and provide key funding to NT practitioners to attend the 2018 AIDC.

“The NT Government is investing $9 million over four years to support the growth and development of the NT screen industry. The NT delegation will join more than 700 attendees from across Australia in sharing their ideas.

“The annual AIDC, provides invaluable networking sessions with leading decision makers from across the globe. Industry members will meet experts and connect with some of the best minds in the industry. It provides many opportunities to expand industry member’s networks, and yet it is intimate enough to ensure face-time with some of the ‘who’s who’ of the industry.

“It’s the ideal place to get in-depth information about key trends in content, technology and business from industry leaders, with a special focus on leading edge developments in the nonfiction screen sector,” said Ms Hill.

The 10 attendees form a culturally diverse industry group from both the Top End and the Red Centre, and include:

  • Karen Martin-Stone - Darwin
  • Jennifer Richards from TV Works - Darwin
  • Maya Newell – Alice Springs
  • Naina Sen - Darwin
  • Penny McDonald from Chili Films - Alice Springs
  • Thomas Lawrence – Darwin
  • Timothy Parish from Undergrowth Productions - Darwin
  • Trisha Morton-Thomas from Brindle Films - Alice Springs
  • Viviana Petyarre from CAAMA - Alice Springs

Most notably, this year’s delegation includes three Aboriginal practitioners; award-winning director Trisha Morton Thomas, and emerging directors Charmaine Ingram and Viviana Petyarre.
