Daly River residents to return home tomorrow

Department of the Chief Minister

Residents of the Daly River community are excited to be returning home tomorrow (Monday) after spending over a week in an evacuation centre in Darwin following extensive flooding in their community.

The first buses to return residents to Daly River community will depart from the Evacuation Centre at the Darwin Showgrounds from 7am, with the Evacuation Centre closing its doors tomorrow.

Over the past week staff from NT Government departments, Victoria Daly Local Council, local contractors and a wide range of non-government organisations have been in the community inspecting, repairing and cleaning homes, facilities and infrastructure ready for the residents return.  Residents have also been going to the community over the last few days to clean and prepare their homes.

While most houses are now habitable and have had power and water restored, work on other community assets and a small number of houses will continue throughout the week.

The Daly River Road will be open from tomorrow morning for residents who are driving back in their own car. Traffic restrictions will continue to be in place and the public are urged to limit their use of the road and exercise care as repairs are continuing. Motorists are encouraged to check the Road Report NT website (roadreport.nt.gov.au) for the latest information on road conditions.

A community barbecue will be held tomorrow afternoon to welcome the residents’ home. The local Nauiyu store is well stocked and will be open until 7pm on Monday. The health centre is fully operational and will be open from Monday for emergencies.

Public schools will be open from Monday 12 February, except Woolianna School which will open on Tuesday. St Francis Xavier Catholic School is expected to be open from Monday 19 February with a range of activities planned for students until they go back to school.

There will be ongoing support to the community during the coming weeks from a range of departments and organisations as residents settle back in.
