Strategic Arts Program Funding Returns in 2018

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

Applications are invited from the Northern Territory Arts community to apply for the 2018 Strategic Arts Program with a total of $400,000 available.

Department of Tourism and Culture, Acting Director Arts NT, Renita Glencross said the Northern Territory Government’s Strategic Arts Program was launched in 2017 to provide targeted funding towards sustainable development of the arts across the Northern Territory.

“The key focus of the program is to provide targeted support for arts sector development initiatives identified through Vibrant NT: Arts and Culture in the Northern Territory. This includes dedicated funding to artists with a disability and to strengthen the career of independent producers and curators by supporting their arts business development,” Ms Glencross said.

In 2018 the program will also offer grants for community arts festivals, with a strong track record of delivery, to apply for strategic funding to increase their sustainability in future years.

Applications for new initiatives in the following four categories are available for NT artists, arts workers, festivals and organisations:
- access for artists with disabilities – grants up to $25,000
- independent producers and curators – grants up to $25,000
- community festival capacity building – grants up to $25,000
- arts industry development – grants up to $100,000

Ms Glencross said the Strategic Arts Program is a response to gaps identified in the sector and are intended to boost a number of outcomes including: increase in Aboriginal employment; access for artists with a disability; sustainability in community arts festivals; business development for independent producers and curators; and outstanding arts industry development initiatives.

“Activities funded through the Strategic Arts Program are expected to have a long-lasting effect in supporting the development of an innovative, capable and sustainable arts industry – a priority identified in Vibrant NT, the NT policy for arts and culture in the NT,” Ms Glencross added.

The 2017 Strategic Arts Program provided $65,600 grant to Artback NT to lead a NT delegation to the 2018 Australian Performing Arts Market (APAM) set to take place in Brisbane from 19-23 February 2018.

CEO of Artback NT Louise Partos said the funding has assisted the largest NT delegation to attend APAM with 14 artists set to showcase and perform and an additional 16 arts workers and arts managers taking part with representatives from across the NT including Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Numbulwar, Bathurst Island and Bulman.

“NT’s Skinnyfish Sound System will showcase and open the First Nationals Party on Tuesday 20 February, followed by a performance by Constantina Bush and Friends,” Ms Partos said.

“This exciting opportunity enables NT artists to secure performances, builds further capacity for partnerships with Asian organisations and learn and engage with others on regional touring."
