The Department of Tourism and Culture’s Territory Wildlife Park is
welcoming 12 new artists to the 2018 Artists
in the Park program.
A diverse range of artists were successful in receiving their place in
the program and include a filmmaker, textile artist, needle-felter, painters,
illustrators, writers, wood sculptors and a photographer.
The Territory Wildlife Park’s Artists
in the Park is designed to give artists exclusive access the Park’s amazing
collection of flora, fauna and naturalist style exhibits, as well as providing
the chance to tap into the knowledge and experience of the Park’s highly
skilled zookeepers and guides.
The Department of Tourism and Culture, Territory Wildlife Park Director, Shael Martin, congratulated the 12 successful artists of the 2018 program.
“I’m thrilled to announce the artists for the Territory Wildlife Park’s
2018 Artists in the Park program.
“The program is a really exciting opportunity for artists to gain behind-the-scenes
access to animals, exhibits and staff. They also have the opportunity to
participate in the Park’s markets, as well as art exhibitions that raise
awareness about threatened species.
“Along with free reign of the Park, artists can interact with Park
visitors to showcase their arts practices while encouraging both staff and
visitors to participate in workshops or community arts projects,” said Ms
Martin.
This year, young award-winning filmmaker Zel Whiting (12 years of age)
joins the program, and has been working with the park to capture footage for a
short film he intends to make about the endangered Northern Quoll.
“Zel was awarded the Overall Winner for the 2017 Canvas Youth Film
Festival in South Australia so it’s very exciting to have him on-board to
continue his wildlife documentary work at the Park on our endangered Northern
Quolls,” added Ms Martin.
The Artists in the Park program
started in 2011 and since then the Park has collaborated with a diverse array
of artists, including textile, en plein artists, photographers, digital media
artists, dancers and choreographers, writers, and even a shoe designer.
The Artists in the Park program is open to a range of creative
practices and platforms, and youth, emerging and indigenous artists are
encouraged to apply.
