A new exhibition by noted Territory visual artist and Northern Territory Library’s Creative in Residence Sarah Pirrie entitled Coastal Links is set to open at the Northern Territory Library on Wednesday 6 December.
Department of Tourism and Culture, Director Northern Territory Library Patrick Gregory said it is the first exhibition of completed creative work to be produced as part of the inaugural Arts NT Creative in Residence program with artists also based at the NT Archives Service in Darwin and the Araluen Cultural Precinct.
Sarah Pirrie’s Residency project includes a Coastal Links public program and the creation of a number of new works including Rocksitting Place-mat, Macrotidal Quadrat Series and a 200 print run artist book Coastal Links: Darwin Coastal Companion Guide.
“Opening up the Northern Territory Library’s beautiful space to artist Sarah Pirrie - to interpret and respond visually and creatively to its collection items - has been an enormous success,” Mr Gregory said.
“Sarah Pirrie’s regular presence in the Library, where she researched, painted, drew, read, wrote and connected with other library users to explain and describe her project was an excellent example of the way a library space can and should be used.”
Sarah Pirrie was selected as the inaugural Northern Territory Library Creative in Residence; she is a highly-acclaimed artist, curator, and writer, and currently Lecturer in Visual Arts across a number of undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Charles Darwin University.
“This has been a truly invaluable experience that has opened my eyes to the amazing resource the Northern Territory Library and staff provide. I know what I have so far achieved will continue to inform my practice well into the future,” Ms Pirrie said.
The Creative in Residence program provides an opportunity for artists to creatively interpret the collections and gain inspirations to produce new art works to add to the collections.
Participating in the Creative in Residence program aligns with the Northern Territory Library’s strategic priority of collecting, growing and energising knowledge about the Northern Territory.
The Coastal Links exhibition will open at the Northern Territory Library at 5.30pm Wednesday 6 December 2017 and be on display until mid-February 2018.
