Northern Territory Library’s iNsTagrammers: the best in NT photography from Instagram exhibition is coming to Alice Springs this summer.

Developed by curator Caddie Brain, the Alice Springs exhibition features 20 new images from Central Australia’s iNsTagrammers, the best snaps of local life from local cattle producers, remote midwives, teachers, ice-cream makers and artists, mums and mayors.

“The exhibition celebrates the very best in contemporary photography shared on social media by Territorians,” Ms Brain said.

“Photographers from all parts of the Northern Territory have contributed their images to the exhibition which features stunning imagery of impossible landscapes, cheeky wildlife and unique Territory pastimes as well as powerful photojournalism.

“Selected for their ability to capture incredible Territory moments, this exhibition presents the work of 30 talented photographers, giving us an insight into their daily lives and their unique way of looking at the world.

Director of Northern Territory Library Patrick Gregory said that photography continues to be one of the most important ways the NT Library preserves the Territory’s social and cultural life, and that social media is quickly becoming the preferred way that people are sharing Territory images and stories to a global audience.

“The exhibition captures our wonderful diversity - the things that unite us, and set us apart from other places. It reveals the profound beauty of our natural environment but also shows there’s more to the Territory than sunsets and crocodiles,” Mr Gregory said.

The Northern Territory Library currently has over 100,000 historic images of the Northern Territory in its collections and encourages the work of creatives through providing access to collections, facilitating research and offering spaces to work.

Araluen Cultural Precinct Director Mark Crees said they are excited to present this exhibition in Alice Springs for the Central Australian community to see after a successful run in Darwin at the Northern Territory Library.

“Instagram has always been an incredible tool for photographers to share the magical, cultural and unique experiences the Northern Territory has to offer,” Dr Crees said.

“We are pleased to see so many artists from the Central Australian community, with some of the Central Australian contributors including Siri Omber @siri.omberg, Mayor Damien Ryan  @damienjryan and Dave Nixon @dixon_nave showcasing what makes the Northern Territory such a special place to live and visit.”

iNsTagrammers: the best in NT photography from Instagram will open at Araluen Arts Centre on 17 November 2017 at 6pm and be on display until 11 March 2018.
