The NT Government will commence maintenance dredging
at Cullen Bay on Monday 30 October to improve and rejuvenate the harbour, allowing for the safe movement of incoming and
outgoing ferry services, cruise operators and private yachts.
This maintenance dredging has been undertaken twice
before in 2000 and 2008 and will take place over a four month period.
Louise McCormick,
General Manager, Transport and Civil Services said the works are required to ensure the
continuation of ferry services out of Cullen Bay to Mandorah and the Tiwi
Islands.
“Dredging
will improve access into and out of the Cullen Bay Marina,” said Ms McCormick.
The project involves the dredging of approximately 91
000 cubic meters of sediment build up. The material will then be pumped into
the inner harbour, allowing it to be naturally dispersed.
“Extensive plume modelling of the sediment has been undertaken. We are
also working closely with NT EPA to ensure there is minimal impact to the
marine ecosystem and environment,” said Ms McCormick.
Access in and out of the marina will be
maintained at all times. Boat users will need to exercise caution around the
dredging equipment and maintain a safe distance.
There
will be minimal impact to harbour users or ferry services and works are
expected to be complete in February 2018.
