The NT Government and Darwin Waterfront Corporation’s Driverless Bus has taken centre stage at Future Street in Sydney this week as part of the 2017 International Festival of Landscape Architecture.
Future Street, an interactive street installation, aims to showcase a diverse range of green street and smart street strategies from around the world.
Sam Burke, General Manager of the Darwin Waterfront Corporation, said the Driverless Bus trial was launched at Waterfront in December 2016 and became Australia’s first open road trial of an EZ10 autonomous passenger vehicle. The trial concluded recently in September 2017.
“The Waterfront location was chosen as it had a public road environment where demand exists for a transport solution to help visitors move between locations for dining, retail, recreation and business,” said Sam.
During the 170 day trial approximately 6000 passengers rode the bus and more than 88 per cent of passenger feedback received was positive.
“The highly successful trial contributes to the government’s vision of a connected CBD, making the city of Darwin more liveable and transforming it into a vibrant, world-class destination using modern autonomous technology,” said Sam.
The innovative project also featured at the National Telstra Vantage Exhibition in Melbourne in September and won an ‘excellence in technology and innovation – on street’ award at the National Parking Industry Awards.
Findings of the trial are being compiled in order to plan the delivery of innovative, well-regulated and sustainable transport services in the future.
