Have your say on the future of Central Alice Springs

Northern Territory Planning Commission (NTPC)

The Northern Territory Planning Commission (NTPC) is updating the Central Alice Springs Area Plans in the NT Planning Scheme to provide for long term growth in the Alice Springs CBD.

Amendments to the NT Planning Scheme to include the Alice Springs Regional Land Use Plan, design guidelines, and to allow eight storey buildings in the CBD have prompted a review of the 20 year old Area Plans to ensure they align with the updated strategic direction and communicate a clear vision for the central area.

The Northern Territory Planning Commission’s primary role is to prepare integrated strategic plans in consultation with the community. The Northern Territory Government has initiated a range of projects aimed at revitalising the Alice Springs CBD and while these are distinct from the Planning Commission project, the Central Alice Springs Area Plan will provide a framework to guide all land use in the long term future.

Chairperson of the NT Planning Commission, David Ritchie, said an area plan for Central Alice Springs is important as it will provide an understanding of the necessary social and physical infrastructure upgrades and land use changes that will occur to support a growing centre.

“These Area Plans will give confidence to government, industry and the community about future land use”, said David Ritchie.

“We are currently at stage one of the three stage planning process where you are invited to have your say, and provide upfront input to a Draft Area Plan,” he said.

The NTPC will be at pop-up stands and hosting information sessions in the CBD throughout October.

The Commission will then release a Draft Area Plan at Stage 2, shaped by:

  • previous studies and consultations;

  • the current area plans;

  • consultation for this project; and

  • current studies into infrastructure, traffic and community services and facilities.

The discussion paper, as well as dates and times for pop-up stalls, information sessions and workshops are all available on the Commission’s website www.planningcommission.nt.gov.au Submissions can be made online, in person or by mail from now until Thursday 9 November 2017.
