Harmony Grants now open for 2018

Territory Families

Applications are now open for community groups and schools around the Northern Territory to apply for grants to support and celebrate community harmony and diversity.

Grants of up to $1000 offer opportunities for eligible applicants to celebrate and promote the Territory’s cultural diversity, and to reflect on the common values and mutual respect we all share as part of our vibrant Territory lifestyle.

Territory Families CEO, Ken Davies, says Harmony Day is a good reminder that everybody belongs, and is about encouraging respect for everyone who calls Australia home.

“Harmony Day also coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,” Mr Davies said.

“This is an important topic, and Territory Families is committed to supporting increased social inclusion and participation within the community from each of our diverse cultural groups.

“Along with Harmony Day, Territory Families also supports the work of the Minister’s Advisory Council on Multicultural Affairs to achieve practical solutions to ensure every Territorian feels valued and respected.”

Along with stand-alone activities, the Harmony Grants can also be used by organisations interested in participating in the 2018 Darwin Waterfront Harmony Soiree.

The popular Harmony Soiree at the Darwin Waterfront will return in May 2018, and is a partnership between the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Darwin Waterfront Corporation, the Multicultural Council of the NT and Darwin Community Arts.

Planning is also underway for the 2018 Alice Springs Big Day Out in Harmony event, which is being organised by the Multicultural Community Services of Central Australia. Eligible organisations can apply for a Harmony Grant to support their participation in this event.

This year, Harmony grants were awarded to 31 schools and community groups throughout the Northern Territory for a wide range of activities, including learning languages, exploring the art of calligraphy, cultural performances, food festivals, storytelling and concerts.

Applications close 31 October 2017.
