A $291,000 contract has been awarded to local engineering firm, Jacobs Group, to further assess the long term options for the Mandorah Jetty and Boat Ramp.
The jetty is receiving ongoing repairs and maintenance, however to continue to adequately service the growing communities of Mandorah and Wagait Beach, a permanent solution for the long term is required.
At the end of May 2017, the Government released the five options for the future of the jetty and boat ramp, following a detailed study of the current infrastructure which included a full engineering assessment as well as community and stakeholder consultation.
The five options included options to upgrade and options to replace or relocate, ranging in cost from $24 million to $84 million. The community preferred option is also the preferred Government solution, with a cost estimate of $24 million.
The preferred concept requires design development and further engineering investigation to enable detailed design and more informed decision-making on the preferred solution.
These works will address any uncertainties in hydrodynamics, geotechnics and bathymetry at and surrounding the site.
The Mandorah Jetty was originally constructed in the late 1960’s and was severely damaged in Cyclone Tracy. Maintenance since then is reported to have been ad hoc, however an ongoing program of repairs and maintenance has been in place since 2010.
Local contractor, Baghwan Marine, is currently carrying out repairs and maintenance works worth almost $700,000 on the jetty, including grid mesh replacement, handrail repairs, fender pile repairs and cleaning and painting of the structure.
