The Territory Wildlife Park (TWP) has today launched Stage One of CROC HEADQUARTERS – a new interpretative education hub on Crocodiles.
CROC HEADQUARTERS, shortened to Croc HQ, is the latest immersive experience at TWP, and builds on the Northern Territory Government’s (NTG) important BE CROCWISE campaign.
Appealing to all ages, Croc HQ aims to improve awareness and dispel the myths around living with crocodiles in the Top End.
TWP Director Shael Martin said wildlife education is key to the TWP’s strategy and she is excited to launch the the new component of the BE CROCWISE campaign at the new Croc HQ.
“Crocs are an iconic native species of the Territory and Croc HQ presents both tourists and Territorians with a unique opportunity to learn how to BE CROCWISE, as well as how we manage these apex predators across the Top End.
“The new space is a multi-use area available for a number of programs including Science Week, Keeper Kids, a daily BE CROCWISE presentation and special Camp Woollybutt overnight school camp programme,” Ms Martin said.
Croc HQ includes crocodile’s skulls, teeth, eggs, and other crocodile paraphernalia such as a real-life crocodile trap as used by the Crocodile Management team in Darwin Harbour and a replica crocodile nest.
Croc HQ is located in the old Aquarium Kiosk following a refurbishment to the structure and its surrounds. The project was funded through a Science Week grant and from the BE CROCWISE Campaign. The areas surrounding the building include outdoor interpretive displays, a play space for children and new landscaping completed during a recent community involvement day.
Ms Martin said that in Stage 2 of the project, the Park aims to develop more interactive experiences using contemporary technologies.
Entry to Croc HQ is included in the general admission to the Territory Wildlife Park and is open daily from 9am-5pm (except Christmas day).
