Regional forums commence on review of signage and activities in NT Government road reserves

Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics

Regional forums will commence today as the Northern Territory Government seeks community feedback on how signage and activities in road reserves could be better managed to minimise hazards to road users, while establishing fair rules about signage and other activities to support business and enterprising individuals.

  • Alice Springs – Tuesday 25 July 2017 – 6:30pm-8pm – Double Tree Resort, 82 Barrett Drive

  • Katherine – Thursday 27 July 2017 – 6pm-7:30pm – Knotts Crossing Resort, Cnr Giles and Cameron Street

  • Greater Darwin – Thursday 3 August 2017 – 6:30pm-8pm – Palmerston Recreational Centre, 11 The Boulevard

The Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL) is responsible for managing road reserves adjacent to Northern Territory Government roads. This includes highways such as the Stuart, Arnhem, Barkly and Victoria Highways, as well as major arterial and regional roads.

The road reserve is the road and area of land between the edge of the asphalt and the boundary of private or business properties.

It is important that signage and commercial activities in the road reserve are appropriate, conducted safely, do not unduly distract motorists or pedestrians, or become a hazard during strong winds.

The department is working on draft guidelines which outline a planned approach to the management of signage and activities in road reserves across the Territory.

The views of all stakeholders will be taken into account when finalising the guidelines in October this year.

The community is encouraged to go online and take the survey at http://haveyoursay.nt.gov.au via the management of activities in road reserves project page. This is also where you will find the Activities in Road Reserves Consultation and Guidelines documents.
