The Araluen Arts Centre presents the annual Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award at the Darwin Entertainment Centre from July 8 to August 4.
Director of the Araluen Cultural Precinct, Dr Mark Crees said after a successful opening of the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award in Alice Springs earlier this year, he was delighted to be able to bring this vibrant exhibition to Darwin for the Top End community to enjoy.
“Portraiture provides a window into ourselves and our heritage, navigating the space between the outer representation of the “sitter” and the inner life of the subject,” Mr Crees said.
“This Award celebrates the significant contribution that Senior Territorians make to our community and the artistic excellence of Territorian artists.
“The Portrait of a Senior Territorian has been held in Darwin since its inception in 1999, so we have been thrilled to present this exhibition in Alice Springs for the very first time.”
The Northern Territory Government committed $58,000 towards the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award to be exhibited in Alice Springs and Darwin.
The Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award opened at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs in April and was seen by 4,416 people across its 9 week showing.
The opening night saw a large crowd of both Alice Springs and Darwin locals, as well as contributing artists from across the Territory, as the judges announced Henry Smith as this year’s Acquisition Award winner.
Smith’s portrait of Craig San Roque was awarded the prestigious prize for his technical artistic excellence and the portrayal of the inner life of his subject.
The 33 works of art have travelled to Darwin for the opening at the Darwin Entertainment Centre on Saturday 8 July at 6.00pm.
The Darwin public will also get their chance to vote for the People’s Choice Award which will be announced at the conclusion of the exhibition.
The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday 10am-4pm in the Gallery of the Darwin Entertainment Centre.
