Nature journaling workshop at Owen Springs Reserve

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

The age-old art of nature journaling will be taught at a workshop at Owens Springs Reserve on Sunday July 2.

“Participants will be joined by guest ecologist and writer/illustrator Paula Peeters and a local ranger, for a fun introduction to nature journaling and tips on recording their nature adventures,” said Department of Tourism and Culture Senior Ranger Parks and Wildlife, Sheridan Martin.

Ms Peeters added “nature journaling helps you notice the details in nature, improve your recognition of different species, and your understanding of where and how they live”.

“No prior art experience is necessary, as anyone can draw, and anyone can write, and I will show you how. In this workshop I will introduce simple warm-up exercises to get your creative juices flowing. Or if you already dabble in the arts, you’ll get new ideas for using nature as your inspiration, and an introduction to the ecology of Owen Springs,” Ms Peeters said.

You’ll need to have a high clearance 4WD and bring a picnic lunch. Drawing and writing materials will be provided.

The cost is $10 and bookings are essential with strictly limited numbers, so please call the Alice Springs Parks and Wildlife office on 8951 8250 to secure your place.

A full packing list and workshop meeting details will be provided on booking.

The workshop will take place from 10am – 3pm on Sunday 2nd of July and finishes within Owen Springs Reserve, allowing you to return to Alice Springs at your own leisure.

Owen Springs Reserve is a 40 minute drive, 60km south west of Alice Springs and provides an outback four wheel drive experience, a quiet bush setting for camping without facilities and ideal picnicking and bird watching opportunities.
