New Darwin Indoor Netball Stadium Tender up for grabs

Department of Tourism, Sport and Culture

The tender to design and construct the new $18 million Netball Stadium at Marrara has been released.

The proposed design of the new fully air conditioned indoor netball stadium includes four national standard netball courts with sprung floor surface, change rooms, spectator seating and administration offices.

Tourism and Culture Chief Executive Officer Alastair Shields said the new stadium had received positive feedback from the local community.

“The new Darwin Indoor Netball Stadium will allow Territorians to enjoy the sport comfortably all year round,” said Mr Shields.

“Netball is one of the most popular sports in the Northern Territory with over 4,000 registered members and this new facility will create better opportunities for local players to succeed at the highest level.”

Mr Shields said the Government will work with the appointed contractor to ensure the design of the stadium includes adequate car parking and medical access.

“We’ve also listened to the community about concerns they’ve raised about the potential for traffic issues in the Marrara precinct associated with the new netball facility and a traffic management study in consultation with the City of Darwin is underway.”

The traffic study will examine issues such as current and projected volume of traffic in the area, queuing times, any potential issues at intersections, whether any road improvements are required, road safety and public transport services.

“The aim of the study is to look at what needs to be done to ensure that users can access and use the site safely and conveniently following construction of the new netball stadium,” added Shields.

The Northern Territory Government fast-tracked $10 million for the construction of the new facility last year and the Federal Government is investing a further $8 million for the key piece of infrastructure.

The contract is expected to be awarded in August 2017 and construction of the new facility is expected to begin later in 2017.

The tender is advertised on the Department of Corporate and Information Services Quotations and Tenders Online: https://tendersonline.nt.gov.au/Tender/List/#!/Current

Tenders close on 25 July 2017.
