The
Araluen Arts Centre is pleased to present RESOLUTION:
new Indigenous photomedia, a touring exhibition from the National Gallery
of Australia.
Drawn
from the National Gallery of Australia Collection, RESOLUTION includes some of the most exciting and thought-provoking
contemporary photomedia, photography and moving-image works produced by
Indigenous artists.
“We
are thrilled to have the National Gallery of Australia return to the Araluen
Arts Centre with another diverse and dynamic touring exhibition of artworks
from their collection,” Director of the Araluen Cultural Precinct Director, Dr
Mark Crees said.
“Throughout
Australia, Indigenous artists engage with photography and new media in ways
that confront, provoke and excite.
“RESOLUTION utilises both contemporary
photomedia practices and early photographic techniques to provide an insight
into historical, personal and cultural issues that are incredibly relevant
today.”
The
foundations of contemporary Indigenous photography were laid in the late 1980s
with a generation of politicised and provocative artists who documented their
experiences around the events of the Bicentennial marking 200 years of European
settlement.
The
last 30 years has seen its maturation and the emergence of artists who engage
critically, thoughtfully, sometimes forcefully, with the present and the past.
RESOLUTION is a physical,
embodied and thought-provoking exhibition of works by artists grappling with
the challenging, hybrid nature of contemporary society.
This
exhibition will showcase photography and new media works by artists such as Tony
Albert, Daniel Boyd, Michael Cook,
Brenda
Croft, Niki Cumpston, Danie
Mellor, Christian
Thompson, and others.
The
exhibition also includes works by local film director and cinematographer
Warwick Thornton.
RESOLUTION will be officially
opened by Kelli Cole, Assistant Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander Art from the National Gallery of Australia, on Friday 9 June at 6.00pm.
The
general public are also invited to learn more on Saturday 10 June at 11am, when Kelli Cole is
joined by contributing artist Robert Fielding, of Mimili community in the APY
lands, for a floor talk on this exciting exhibition.
RESOLUTION runs until August 13.
