Operation Soteria to check liquor licensees

Department of Attorney-General and Justice

Licensing Inspectors will be inspecting  pubs, clubs, taverns  and takeaway alcohol outlets across the Top End and Central Australia over the next two weeks to make sure they’re complying with the legislation.

The Director-General of Licensing, Ms Cindy Bravos said the responsible service of alcohol helps control the negative impacts alcohol can have on our community.

“Liquor licensees are obliged to ensure alcohol is served responsibly,” Ms Bravos said.

“By supporting responsible alcohol consumption and preventing intoxication, licensees reduce the risk of adverse incidents occurring and help provide a safe venue for customers and staff.”

“The vast majority of licensees are doing the right thing, but as we head into dry season, our peak tourist and festive season of the year, it’s important that Licencing Inspectors are out ensuring compliance.”

“Licensing Inspectors will be out  enforcing the responsible service of alcohol across Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.”

“Our officers will be in the city, suburbs and regional centres checking everything from CBD nightclubs to corner stores.”

“Monitoring compliance is an important role that Licencing NT plays in the Territory and this high visibility operation sends a strong message to licensees that we take this issue seriously.”

“During Operation Soteria, Licensing Inspectors will be ensuring that licensees are

-        operating in compliance with the conditions of their liquor licence

-        complying with legislation around serving alcohol to minors or intoxicated persons

-        removing drunk and disorderly patrons from their venue.

Licensees found not to be complying with their licence conditions can face penalties ranging from fines through to suspension or cancellation of their licence.
