George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens invites the community to the Botanic Gardens Australia and New Zealand (BGANZ) Open Day this Sunday, May 28 from 10am to 2pm.
George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens (GBDBG) Director Bryan Harty said the key objective of the BGANZ Open Day is to celebrate the role Botanic Gardens play in our lives.
“Botanic Gardens from every State and Territory in Australia, and North and South Island, New Zealand are involved, that’s over 70 Botanic Gardens and Arboretum taking part in the second BGANZ Open Day,” Mr Harty said.
“We want to engage the community and promote the value of botanic gardens and their role in plant conservation.
“A highlight of the day at the GBDBG will be the official launch of a new digital tree walk. GBDBG and Walk Darwin are launching a free trial of the various garden walks including the new tree walk – Every tree has a story to tell.
“Top End Orienteers are launching the GBDBG newly created permanent orienteering course. We’ve never had an orienteering course before and this is a great addition to the Gardens, one that offers differing degrees of difficulty.”
There will be various Territory Proud food and lifestyle stalls and Friends of Darwin Botanic Gardens will be selling a small range of plants.
There will be lots of activities for children including large format board games to play and experienced Gardens staff helping children with the Crate Tree Climbing.
Corrugated Iron Youth Arts is putting on a performance and a short gardening skit.
There will be lots of food options available including special offers at Eva’s Café. There will also be special reduced rate for short Segway tours.
“I encourage everyone to get out on this national day to discover what the GBDBG has to offer,” Mr Harty said.
Visitors to the BGANZ Open Day are encouraged to use #DarwinBotanicalGardens and #BGANZopenday
