Schools across the Katherine region will be abuzz this week with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities as part of Katherine’s inaugural STEM Week 2017.

Over 200 students will be participating in a range of exciting, hands-on activities, including industry tours and Questacon workshops that will equip them with knowledge and skills in STEM.

The industry tours will see students from Katherine and remote schools visit the RAAF Base, Katherine Research Station and Katherine Hospital giving the students exposure to a variety of career options.

Principal of Ngukurr School Lynda Pascoe said Questacon would be running workshops in the remote school as part of STEM Week, giving students an appreciation of science applied in a different context.

“Not only will our Year 7 and 8 students get the chance to participate in Questacon workshops, our teachers will also participate in professional development sessions which will provide them with new ideas around how they teach their students,” Ms Pascoe said.

“It is very exciting for Ngukurr School as it allows our students to participate in a hands-on, interactive STEM workshop which as a remote school is a fantastic opportunity for practical learning.

“This workshop will not only give our students the opportunity to project their futures in science and technology, but it will also help to equip students with logical and creative thinking skills to tackle problems both in and outside of school.”

A professional development program for teachers will be run throughout STEM Week in Katherine where workshops will include coding, robotics and practical science.

STEM Week culminates on 1 June with schools across the Katherine region competing in a ‘Science and Engineering Challenge Day’ where students will undertake a range of activities, all vying for points and subsequently, a trophy.

Katherine’s STEM Week runs from 22 May until 1 June.
