The Darwin Waterfront Corporation has reopened the Recreation Lagoon for swimming.

During the ten days of closure the Corporation has:

• Carried out daily drag netting of the inner-Recreation Lagoon using Surf Life Saving NT personnel;
• Performed nightly spotlighting inspections;
• Replaced the stinger-net in the inner-Recreation Lagoon; and
• Consulted with jellyfish experts.

During this time there has been no further evidence of dangerous jellyfish in the Recreation Lagoon.

The Corporation has now revised procedures for future pump maintenance to minimise the risk of jellyfish entering the Recreation Lagoon.

“The Darwin Waterfront Corporation apologises for the inconvenience caused by the closure, however safety is always our number one priority,” General Manager, Darwin Waterfront Corporation, Samuel Burke said.

“We are pleased to be able to reopen for the May Day long weekend, and the start of the Dry Season where we have a jam-packed events program for the public to enjoy.”

“Visitors can be confident that the Recreation Lagoon remains one of the safest places in the Top End to swim.”

Swimmers are encouraged to enjoy the Recreation Lagoon and to remember that it is an active marine ecosystem and not a pool. Some marine stings will always be possible. Swimmers who encounter any type of marine sting should immediately report to lifeguards on duty for treatment and assessment.
