The Department of Tourism and Culture, Acting Executive Director Arts and Museums, Patrick Gregory is encouraging Territorians to remember the 75th Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin with the commemorative plate program now being extended just in time for Anzac Day.

“Our special edition Bombing of Darwin number plates provide the perfect gift to commemorate one of the most important days in Australian wartime history – Anzac Day, while also honouring one of the most significant days in the Territory’s history – The Bombing of Darwin.

“No other city in Australia carries as much military history as Darwin and the commemorative plates are a really distinctive way to remember our rich past, while also providing a great way for Territorians to pay tribute to Darwin’s service men and women.

“I’m proud to extend the program to sell the remaining 570 of the 75th Anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin number plates for Anzac day, with all money raised going directly to Legacy NT  who do incredible work to support those who have been impacted by war,”  Mr Gregory said.

The 75th Bombing of Darwin commemorative number plate initiative is a partnership between the Northern Territory Government’s The Territory Remembers program and the Automobile Association of the Northern Territory (AANT).

The commemorative plates aim to raise a total of $125,000 for Legacy NT, with a total of $64,450 already raised as part of the program.

President of Legacy NT Jack Hamilton OAM said he was thrilled the NT Government and the AANT were extending the program to continue raising funds that go directly to support war veterans and their families.

“It is pleasing to see that the Northern Territory Government with the support of AANT have agreed to extend the program until February 2018 to enable more Territorians to get behind this great project. This will enable us to continue the support provided to our legacy dependants making sure that they are not financially or socially disadvantaged. I thank those who have already purchased their plates,” he said.

AANT CEO Byron Henderson said he is delighted that AANT will continue its partnership with the NT Government and Legacy to sell the remainder of the commemorative plates.

“Raising over $64,000 in 2017 was a fantastic effort and it is our hope that the remainder of the plates will be sold before February 2018 so we can present an even larger cheque to Legacy NT to assist Territorian families.

“We encourage everyone who would like a number plate for their own car or even as a gift to call or visit us in the Smith St Mall where our staff will assist with selecting a B.O.D. number.”
