A search is underway for two young detainees, Josiah Binsaris aged 17 and Trey Mawson aged 17, who escaped from the Darwin Don Dale Youth Detention Centre last night.

The escape occurred after detainees had been returned to their accommodation blocks in the early evening due to a heavy storm that was about to hit the area.

Contact is being made with known friends and relatives seeking their support to locate the young detainees.

NT Police are also assisting with the search.
