The Northern Territory Government is offering a total of $250,000 in NT Heritage Grants to individuals and organisations working on projects relating to a significant heritage site in the Territory.
CEO for the Department of Tourism and Culture Alastair Shields said the grants are available to assist with the conservation of privately owned heritage places within the Territory as well as research or promotional projects related to a Territory heritage place.
“The Grant Program is available to individuals, private businesses, non-profit organisations and community groups, including Aboriginal organisations within the NT.
“Priority is given to places on the NT Heritage Register, but grants may also be considered for work to other places of historical importance.
“The NT Heritage Grants have helped previous applicants undertake physical conservation work, research and documentation and promotional projects,” he said.
Funding may be provided for conservation work to buildings and other structures, Aboriginal archaeological sites, places of social significance and places of natural significance including flora, fauna and geological sites.
Mr Shields said physical conservation works are required to be in accordance with the Burra Charter and may include preservation, maintenance, restoration, reconstruction and interpretation works.
“Promotional projects or those that involve research and documentation may be considered if they relate directly to a place or object, require historical research, recording or mapping work, or required funding to prepare conservation management plans.”
In 2016 a total of 15 projects totalling $221,427 received funds under the annual NT Heritage Grants Program with highlights including; repairs to Parish Sidney Williams Hut in Tennant Creek, the construction of a Serving Counter for 1889 Railway Refreshment Rooms at Adelaide River; and a history board display of old Mt Riddock Homestead at the GemTree Caravan Park in Central Australia.
Applications for the NT Heritage 2017 Grants Program close Tuesday 2 May 2017.
