On Saturday, a youth detainee undergoing a medical assessment at Royal Darwin Hospital attempted to escape from the custody of Youth Justice Officers.

The two Youth Justice Officers restrained the young person, and following a medical assessment the young person was returned to Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

One Youth Justice Officer sustained minor injuries during the altercation and a second Youth Justice Officer sustained a fractured wrist. Both have received medical treatment and have been offered ongoing support.

The young person was unharmed during the attempted escape.
