Barkly Nature Watch

Parks and Wildlife Commission of the Northern Territory

Residents in the Tennant Creek area are invited to join Parks and Wildlife Rangers for the February Barkly Nature Watch activities.

The Barkly Nature Watch encourages the community to get amongst the flora and fauna of their Barkly backyards and participate in informative and fun activities organised by Parks and Wildlife.

The February activities kick off with bird watching for kids on Thursday the 16th of February at 4:30pm outside the Tennant Creek Library.

Parks and Wildlife Community Engagement Officer Susie Armes say’s participants will learn how to use binoculars, learn what to look for when bird watching, and identify some common characters in the trees.

“We’ll search high and low for feathered friends, and hopefully make some along the way. We aim to make the activity as fun and informative as we can and teach the various skills needed for birdwatching.”

On Saturday the 18th of February there will be a community nature walk at 9am at Lake Mary Ann.

“This will be our first walk for the year at Lake Mary Ann, and with all the wet weather recently, we will see what amazing wildlife is on offer. We’re likely to spot frogs, flowering plants, birds, and reptiles, so bring along your friends and get the added benefits of that weekly dose of nature.”

The Barkly Nature Watch also encourages locals and visitors to record the species they’re seeing in their backyard, building our knowledge of Australian flora and fauna.

“You can be a part of a larger project to record what’s observed in the Barkly. We want you to tell us what you see and hear out there and share with others what you’re observing. Come along to find out some great Apps and places to record what you’re seeing.”
