A new exhibition from Northern Territory Library showcasing Mr Fujita's Photo Album, is now open.

The display includes film and over 30 rare images from the Fujita Family’s photo album as well as film materials.

The exhibition tells the story of the Fujita Salvage Operation in Darwin from 1959 to 1960.

After the Bombing of Darwin by the Japanese, there were many large wrecks remaining in the harbour nearly two decades later, which were an impediment to shipping and development.

After many attempts to find a salvage contractor, the tender was awarded to Japanese salvage expert Ryugo Fujita and his team of 120 workers in July 1959, who lived aboard the first of the salvaged ships, the British Motorist.  

The Northern Territory Library Community Engagement Coordinator Caddie Brain said exhibitions were a great way to share stories with the local community.

“This exhibition tells a powerful story of post-war reconciliation and friendship.

“The Territory is rich in untold stories and the library’s collections are a treasure trove of these kinds of histories.

“We deliver a number of exhibitions each year so there’s always something new for locals and visitors to explore while they’re in the NT.

“The exhibition is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday to Friday and 1pm to 5pm Saturday and Sunday,” she said.

In some circles, it was initially considered controversial to have a Japanese company return to Australia to do this workpost-war. The work was complex and dangerous.

The photo album, film and manuscripts were donated to the Northern Territory Library in 2010, when Ryugo’s son Senichiro returned to Darwin.

The display is open for viewing now at Northern Territory Library at Parliament House until 12 March 2017 to mark the 75th commemoration of the Bombing of Darwin in February.
