A median break intersection on the Stuart Highway in front of the Coolalinga United fuel station will be upgraded to improve safety for all road users.
Ongoing population and development growth of the Coolalinga area has increased traffic and created road safety and accessibility issues at the median break.
The median break intersection currently in place was not built to service high volume turning traffic from new developments in the growing business precincts located adjacent to the highway.
Traffic investigations show some drivers are using the median break in an unsafe manner which has resulted in increasing numbers of accidents at this location.
Urgent traffic management works will be implemented to improve road safety at this intersection. Traffic movements across the median break will be restricted, except for right turns to the service roads.
A construction tender for the road safety improvement works was released today.
Works will commence in January and are expected to be completed in March, weather permitting.
The Northern Territory Government is also planning to build a new signalised Coolalinga intersection that can safely service business precincts located on either side of the Stuart Highway.
All stakeholders in the area will be consulted.
