Recovery update at Kintore

Department of the Chief Minister

Recovery efforts are underway at Kintore with Northern Territory Government resources being deployed to the area to assist the community.

The emergency shelter at the local school remains open and is being utilised by 53 community members, being a reduction from 80 the previous evening.

The Territory Emergency Management Council has met this morning to coordinate the transition from response to recovery.

The Regional Recovery Coordinator Paul Terawsky said NT Government resources from Power and Water, Department of Housing and Community Development, Territory Families had been deployed to assist recovery efforts.

“Five electricians are being deployed by aircraft to Kintore today (29 December 2016) from the Department of Housing and Community Development along with staff from Territory Families,” he said.

“The Department of Housing and Community Development is coordinating the clean-up and repair of flood affected houses, with cleaners due to be deployed to Kintore tomorrow.

“We expect the majority of houses to be re-occupied by the end of this week.

“Precautionary electrical checks of all housing dwellings will be carried out including non-flooded dwellings, due to the severity of the rain event.

“Water in the community has subsided and there are no dwellings inundated, the community retains full power and water facilities and health care and aged care services are operating without issue.”

Mr Terawsky said messaging was being provided to community members to assist their recovery efforts and Red Cross were also providing clean-up advice.

Summary of Housing inspections:

  •        41 (of 66) Housing properties inspected.
  •       25 Housing properties being inspected today. Preliminary inspections indicate that approximately 10 of these properties have had some flood water inundation.
  •       19 Housing properties have been confirmed as having flood water inundation. Most have already been cleaned up and re-occupied.
