Alternate Katherine heavy vehicle route identified

Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics

A Northern Territory Government planning study to establish an alternative heavy vehicle route around Katherine town centre is nearing completion.

A preferred route has been selected as a result of extensive Katherine community feedback and technical assessments.

The preferred heavy vehicle corridor falls predominantly outside of potential flood areas, and will cross the Katherine River over a new high level bridge.

The corridor is vital in the long term planning for economic growth with expected increases in heavy vehicles using the Stuart Highway to transport, agriculture, cattle and resources to Darwin for export.

The preferred route has minimal impact for land holdings and any affected landowners have been contacted.

Undertaking comprehensive planning now is important for ensuring that the most viable solution is identified and a road corridor secured.

Tourists will still have easy access to Katherine town centre on the existing highway and Katherine pedestrians will be safer with a reduction in road trains and heavy vehicles traveling through the town centre.

Information sessions about the preferred heavy vehicle route will be held at the Oasis Shopping Centre to inform the Katherine community of the planning and consultation study outcomes.

Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions about the reasoning that led to the selection of the preferred route.

The information sessions are:

  • Friday 16 December 2016 – 2pm to 5pm

  • Saturday 17 December 2016 – 9am to 12 midday

  • Friday 3 February 2017– 2pm to 5pm

  • Saturday 4 February 2017 - 9am to 12 midday

  • Friday 24 February 2017 – 2pm to 5pm

  • Saturday 25 February 2017 - 9am to 12 midday

Katherine residents and interested parties are encouraged to view the preferred route and further information at dipl.nt.gov.au

The Australian Government is fully funding the study as part of a broader program of infrastructure works in the Katherine Region. This includes intersection upgrades and widening works on Bicentennial Road, and is expected to be the first section of the alternative route.
