The Parks and Wildlife Commission of the NT (PWCNT) advises that
Manton Dam Recreation Area has been closed to recreational activities, including fishing and
water-based sports, following a sighting today
of a suspected estuarine (saltwater) crocodile.
District Manager Nigel Weston said the
estimated 2.5 - 3 metre saltwater crocodile was sighted on the southern end of
the dam, between old swim beach and the boat ramp and the popular recreation
area would stay closed until the PWCNT Crocodile Management Team had undertaken
comprehensive crocodile surveys of the area.
“Public safety is our number one priority and the area will be closed to the public for water-based activities whilst spotlight surveys are undertaken by the Crocodile Management Unit,” Mr Weston said.
The decision to reopen the Manton Dam will be reassessed by the PWCNT on Sunday, 6 November but it could remain closed for up to five consecutive nights.
“The
sighting serves as a timely reminder for the public
to BE CROCWISE in and around Top End waters at all times, especially now the
weather is warming up and crocodiles are becoming more active.” Mr Weston said.
“Members of the public are urged to report any suspected estuarine crocodile
sightings to the Crocodile Management Unit on 0419 822 859.”
