The Katherine Railway Bridge will be closed to pedestrians and cyclists for the next fortnight while maintenance works are carried out.
Local company Katherine Tree Maintenance and Cremasco will be completing the works which form part of the heritage preservation program for the Northern Australia Railway. The contractor has the specialist abseiling qualifications and experience required for the job.
While the structural integrity of the 209 metre bridge is sound, routine maintenance is required.
The upgrade will be carried out in stages to prevent too much disruption to the public.
Stage 1 works will include rust proofing of beams, new water depth markers placed on the central pillar and the installation of new interpretative signage.
These works are not intended to target exterior graffiti on the railway bridge.
