SecureNT improved ahead of cyclone season

Department of the Chief Minister

The Northern Territory (NT) Government’s emergency information website SecureNT, has been overhauled, with new social media alerts among the many improvements for the coming cyclone season.

Director of Emergency Recovery for the Department of the Chief Minister Collene Bremner said securent.nt.gov.au is designed to assist Territorians to prepare for an emergency and stay up-to-date.

“One of the most significant developments with securent.nt.gov.au is the new social media alerts feed, displaying real-time emergency information as it happens,” Ms Bremner said.
“This feature will give the full picture of the key information the public need to know in an emergency such as a flood or cyclone.

“The social media alerts include alerts from Police, Fire and Emergency Services, the Bureau of Meteorology, Power and Water, NT, Bushfires NT and Road Report NT.”

The tropical cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April.

Preparedness information available on securent.nt.gov.au includes: tips on flood safety, links to flood guides, what to put in an emergency kit and how to create a household emergency plan.

Maps of emergency shelter locations and hospitals are also available.

“As well as being easier to search, the SecureNT website is also responsive to mobiles and tablet -devices,” Mrs Bremner said. “These improvements are timely as the Bureau of Meteorology has predicted an above-average cyclone season for the 2016-17 wet season.”

Securent.nt.gov.au is arranged in three easy-to-follow topics: Prepare, Respond and Recover. Territorians should consider all forms of communications during an emergency and stay tuned to local media.

Northern Territory Emergency Service Regional Manager, Northern Operations, Mark Cunnington welcomed the upgrade to securent.nt.gov.au, saying it was important for the community to have access to critical information.

“Now is the time for all Territorians to be making preparations for the upcoming season,” he said. “The Securent.nt.gov.au website is a great resource for the community to access appropriate guidance on what they should be doing, such as having a Household Emergency Plan and ensuring they have an up to date emergency kit, which includes a battery-operated radio.”

The Territory public can also stay up-to-date by downloading the SecureNT app, which links to the website features. The new SecureNT app will be available on Android and Apple devices on 27 October 2016.
