Nominations are now open to join the Katherine Water Advisory Committee (KWAC).

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Water Resources Executive Director, Jo Townsend, said the KWAC’s main role would be effective implementation of the 2016-2019 Water Allocation Plan (WAP) for the Tindall Limestone Aquifer, Katherine and the development of the new plan that is due to take effect in 2019.

“This aquifer represents one of the Territory’s highest yielding, good quality groundwater resources, and is utilised for agricultural and industry enterprises, public water supply, domestic use and the maintenance of green spaces in the Katherine town area,” Ms Townsend said.

“The aquifer also sustains the dry season flows of the Katherine River, providing important cultural, recreational and environmental benefits.

“Becoming a KWAC member represents a tremendous opportunity for community and stakeholder involvement in the management of the aquifer.

“The KWAC will discuss matters such as new research, water resource investigations, monitoring programs, and water allocation policies, as well as general licence holder compliance issues.

“Additionally, the KWAC will provide a point of contact and exchange for stakeholder concerns and interests in the sustainable use and conservation of the Tindall Limestone Aquifer, Katherine.”

Anyone interested in becoming a Committee member is urged to nominate by the 21st October 2017.
