Six teams from four Territory schools will be representing the Northern Territory at the Australasian Pacific Final of Tournament of Minds next month after a successful win at the NT heat over the weekend.
Tournament of Minds is a national problem solving competition for students from primary years through to Year 10 where students in teams of seven complete challenges in three separate categories – Science Technology, Engineering Mathematics and Language Literature.
NT Tournament of Minds Director Desley Lawrence said “The tournament was a resounding success with an excellent turnout of competitors and support from key stakeholders”.
“It was fantastic to see so many students from different parts of the Northern Territory come together and participate in an exciting and innovative competition,” Ms Lawrence said.
“Congratulations to the winning teams and I look forward to seeing you on the national stage on the Gold Coast in three weeks’ time.”
Over 400 students competed in 64 teams from 26 government and non-government schools in the Northern Territory heat of the tournament on Saturday 17 September 2016.
Darwin Middle School students were awarded four of the six titles in the secondary division – the biggest win of the day.
Principal of Darwin Middle School Marcus Dixon said “I am very proud of the students and staff involved in the tournament and congratulate them on these results.”
“The passion of our students and their pursuit of excellence is clearly articulated by this outstanding result and our teachers should be commended for their ability to ignite the enthusiasm of our students in such an important field of study,” Mr Dixon said.
Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.
The tournament aims to help students develop enterprise, creativity and time management skills, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment.
Programs such as Tournament of Minds provide students with the opportunity to enhance career-enabling science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) skills.
