Tonight, over 1100 students from across the Territory will perform in the opening night of the 2016 Beat Festival show ‘Stellar’.

Featuring students from right across the Territory performing as singers, dancers and musicians, the festival showcases the many talents of primary, middle and senior school students in this large combined schools production led by the NT Music School.

Principal of NT Music School Bill Grose said “This is a very exciting time in the performing arts calendar.”

"Stellar is shaping up to be a brilliant showcase with ticket sales strong, demonstrating once again the wide-spread community support for Territory students in this industry,” Mr Grose said.

“The students, teachers, schools and families are really feeling the buzz of this year’s show and can’t wait for the opening performance tonight.”

This year, students from the Tiwi Islands, Nhulunbuy, the wider Katherine region and Alice Springs will join Darwin and Palmerston students for the 37th annual Beat Festival.

The winning band from this year’s Battle of the School Bands, Gaia, are also performing in the show.

Deputy Chief Executive School Education Marion Guppy said “Participating in school performances, especially something as iconic as the Beat Festival, enhances a student’s academic achievement and social development.”

“I am extremely supportive of Arts education in Northern Territory schools, the Beat Festival is a fantastic example of how it provides a memorable and inclusive educational experience for all students,” Mrs Guppy said.

“I congratulate the students, teachers and support staff for their hard work and dedication in planning, rehearsing and now performing the 2016 Beat Festival.”
