The Territory Wildlife Park will next week host the 3rd Australian Sea Turtle Symposium.

Department of Land Resource Management (DLRM) marine threatened species scientist Rachel Groom said the three day symposium will provide a forum for a broad range of discussion and activities relating to marine turtle conservation and management.

Held every two years, the symposium is an opportunity for researchers, rangers, managers, community groups and non-government organisations to engage and exchange on the most recent developments for marine turtle conservation and management.

“This year’s symposium will cover marine turtle nesting biology, in-water monitoring, conservation and management, as well as anatomy and physiology of marine turtles,” Ms Groom said.

“Workshops will include a marine turtle necropsy, turtle tagging and animal ethics.”

Ms Groom said field trips during the week included a visit to Charles Darwin University Aquaculture facilities to visit marine turtles currently kept for rehabilitation and eventual release, as well as a trip to Bare Sand Island near Darwin to visit the Territory’s longest running turtle monitoring project.
