Broken, the award winning play by Territory playwright Mary Anne Butler, heads to the Araluen Arts Centre on Thursday, August 18, at 8pm.
“Broken won Australia’s richest literary prize, the Victorian Prize for Literature, earlier this year. This is the first time a play has received this award in the history of the Prize and it is a Northern Territory play by a Northern territory artist. It is an incredible achievement. It was also the winner of the 2016 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for Drama,” said Dr Mark Crees, Director of Araluen Cultural Precinct.
Broken follows the lives of three individuals on a fateful night set in play by a car crash in the Central Desert.
As a single fraught night unfolds, secrets are shared and promises broken. Time shifts on its axis and three worlds collide: from the past to the present, and back again – scattering broken pieces of lives along the way.
A distinctively Northern Territory work with a universal theme, Broken wrestles with matters of chance, choice, hope and fate posing the question: When you find yourself empty, how do you start again?
Poetic, visceral and extremely moving, this haunting story of resilience and survival takes you into the heart of its characters and the Australian landscape, offering up a devastatingly fresh look at our national identity.
Broken comes to Alice Springs direct from the 2016 Darwin Festival.
“Broken's success highlights the significance of Territory playwrights on a national scale and is a show that simply must not be missed. This cast brings the work to life in a way that will stay with you long after the curtain falls,” Dr Crees said.
Ticket prices are adults for $39.00, concession for $35.00 and Friends of the Araluen Arts Centre for $32.00.
All tickets are available from the Araluen Box Office on (08) 8951 1122.
