The Northern Territory Government’s Office of Major Projects Infrastructure and Investment confirms that a competitive process to support the development of a luxury hotel in Darwin remains ongoing, but that no final decision has been made.
The Expression of Interest (EOI) phase of the project concluded in early March 2016, with a small number of proponents short-listed to proceed to the Detailed Proposals Phase.
The closing date for submission of detailed proposals was 27 June 2016.
A spokesperson from Office of Major Projects Infrastructure and Investment said an independent evaluation committee has been established to assess the proposals.
“We have several shortlisted proposals which are being considered by the evaluation committee,” the spokesperson said.
“A project of this scale takes time and needs to go through a robust evaluation process, overviewed by an independent probity advisor.
“That process involves the evaluation committee considering each proposal on its merits and making a recommendation to Government for its consideration. The process is underway, but no final decision has been made. We expect to be in a position to make an announcement regarding the outcome of the process in the next few weeks.”
The Northern Territory Government is keen to address demand for a higher standard of accommodation in Darwin.
This will create benefits to the NT in delivering luxury accommodation and hospitality offerings not previously seen in Darwin.
A luxury hotel would contribute to driving long term business and luxury tourist visits to the Northern Territory.
The spokesperson said the Deckchair Cinema has been closely consulted throughout all stages of the project.
