Reduce the risk of fires - be responsible this Territory Day

Bushfires NT are reminding Territorians to be safe and responsible when letting off fireworks this Territory Day.

Bushfires NT Senior Policy Officer Ken Baulch said Territory Day is a day of celebration and while most people do the right thing, every year people get injured and property is damaged as a result of inappropriate use of fireworks.

“Responsible use of fireworks simply means doing a little planning and following the rules,” Mr Baulch said.

“We are reminding the public to please only use fireworks in an open, clear or well watered area and avoid areas with a lot of dry grass or other fuels. Fireworks can cause dangerous fires very quickly.

“Please make sure there is ready access to water in the area where you plan to use the fireworks and stick to the approved times for using fireworks – 6pm to 11pm tonight.

“It is also important to not light bonfires near grass and fuel that might catch alight, and never leave a fire unattended – you must put the fire out before you leave the area.”

Bushfires NT and the volunteer bushfire brigade network help landowners with fire management across rural and remote parts of the Territory outside the major towns.

“21 volunteer bushfire brigades across the Territory will be standing by tonight to respond to any reports of fire,” Mr Baulch said.

“Brigade members are all volunteers who give up time with their families and miss any opportunity to join in the Territory Day celebrations when they are called on to respond to fires.

“Please be responsible tonight and let everyone enjoy the Territory Day celebrations.”
